GAIN GOOD PR AROUND AMERICAN LEGIONCONGRESSIONAL CHARTER ANNIVSERSARY
There’s a very important occasion approaching, and we can all gain some positive PR in the process. September 16th marks the 90th anniversary of The American Legion’s charter by the U.S. Congress, and there several ways our Posts across the Department of Oregon can obtain some additional recognition locally.
For starters, you can present your local city council with a proclamation saluting the American Legion. It’s a great way for you to gain appreciation for all that we do as Legionnaires. We’re suggesting that the proclamations ask for all of September to be dedicated as American Legion Month across Washington.
Once your city council adopts a resolution, you can easily spin that recognition into additional coverage in your local newspaper. Finally, this will be an occasion to celebrate our 90th and to make your post members even prouder of our many efforts that serve veterans, youth and the community.
To assist you in these efforts, Department is “posting” several tools on its website and distributing them by e-mail in August. These tools will include (1) a resolution in which you fill in your local information, and (2) a “how to” list of getting it to your city councils for approval.
The tools will also include (3) a sample PR release where you again fill in local information and (4) a “how to” submit list of getting the news placed with the media in your community. Each of these documents will be formatted in Microsoft Word and easily downloaded from the Department website or received as an attachment to your e-mails.
If you followed this same procedure in March to gain good PR around the 90th birthday, you can do so again with this opportunity—especially those posts who didn’t take action last spring. Thus the power of saluting the anniversary of our Congressional charter (and making news) lies in your hands, and we’ll be providing the help to do so. In addition to assisting Posts to gain local recognition, Department will also be seeking salutations from the Governor’s office. PLEASE SEND COPIES OF ANY RESOLUTIONS YOU OBTAIN ALONG WITH COPIES OF NEWS CLIPPINGS TO DEPARTMENT—ATTENTION DON WEBER, PR COMMISSION CHAIR.Think about how this positive PR will help you proudly retain present post members as well as attract new American Legion members! You can do it!
